The Trails community is fortunate to have a number of residents who have been stepping ahead to help the rest of us move beyond the fires. Libby Saleh established a google news group that makes it easy for neighbors to post questions regarding the fire recovery and get answers back from other neighbors. If you haven’t already joined and would like to, send an email to the-trails@googlegroups.com for more info and to get started. Arleen Gimbel’s www.thetrailsnews.com is another valuable site that offers interactive postings, information, and news about our Trails.
In addition, the Pomerado Newspaper Group carries RB news online. You can see the paper at www.mylocalnews.com/nws.

Edward J. Silva, Jr. was born on July 31, 1934 in the New England seaport of Gloucester, Massachusetts. He continued the Silva family seagoing tradition by attending Maine Maritime Academy. Throughout his days as a cadet, Ed actively participated as the bandmaster, led the orchestra during training cruise dances, held the rank of company commander, and was a member of both the Propeller Club and Yearbook staff. In his senior year, Ed was presented with the MMA Alumni Association award given each year to the midshipman who contributed the most to his class and the Academy. Upon graduation in 1957, he earned a Bachelor of Marine Science as a Deck Officer as well as a commission as an Ensign in the United States Naval Reserve.
During Captain Silva's storied seafaring merchant marine career, he completed 15 complete circumnavigations of the world as an officer and captain aboard American Export Lines while calling upon 26 countries and 29 foreign ports.
As his maritime career progressed, Captain Silva received licenses as both a Master of Unlimited Steam & Motor Vessels and Unlimited Sail of any gross tons on the open ocean and spent 8 years as a Senior Pilot for the Panama Canal Company. Over the next 26 years, Captain Silva served as a Senior Pilot in San Diego, piloting more than 9,800 vessel movements as well as the safe return of the EXXON VALDEZ into San Diego Bay. Ed rose to the rank of Captain in both the Merchant Marine and United States Naval Reserve before retiring after 37 years of active and reserve service.
Captain Silva’s leadership talents led to roles in many distinguished positions such as the Past President and Founder of the MMA Alumni Chapter – Panama Canal and the Past President, MMA Alumni Chapter – San Diego. Ed is also the current President, Homeowner’s Association, Rancho Bernardo, San Diego as well as a life member of the Propeller Club of the United States, San Diego Maritime Museum, Naval Reserve Association and Retired Officer’s Association.

The Board would like to extend their condolences to the Trails owners who
lost their homes to the recent fires. It has been a
difficult time for our community. From the moment the
first hint of danger began early that Monday morning on
the 22nd of October until now, many stories have
emerged. Some involve the way the reverse-911 system
worked or didn't, while others recount the heroism of
our local neighbors helping others who needed
assistance. We'll certainly hear more as time passes and
learn from the experience. One thing most Trails
residences will agree on: we are all very blessed to be
living here.
